Grief and Loss
Everyone will experience some type of loss in his or her lifetime. Although grief is a normal reaction to loss, there are different ways people grieve. Some people are able to grieve in healthy ways and others may struggle with the emotions and feelings that a loss creates. During grief stages, unhealthy coping mechanisms may develop. Sometimes sadness progresses into major depression or anger manifests into bitterness or resentment. Along with talking to friends and family, a support group and counseling may be beneficial.

- Denial: “This can’t be happening to me.”
- Anger: “Why is this happening? Who is to blame?”
- Bargaining: “Make this not happen, and in return I will ____.”
- Depression: “I’m too sad to do anything.”
- Acceptance: “I’m at peace with what happened.
